How You Can Help

Now that the City of Calgary has agreed in principle to re-insert the Airport Trail Tunnel into the Calgary Transportation Plan, ATAC urges you to write your provincial and federal MP's to assist with the funding for it.

We encourage you to express to the government representatives (see list below) your support for a transportation vision that includes the Airport Trail East Access Tunnel to the Airport. This is crucial for ensuring a better transportation future for all Calgarians.

Why Calgary Needs the Airport Trail Tunnel
The Airport Trail Tunnel is needed to provide the following:
  • Bus Rapid Transit & Light Rail Transit capacity to the Calgary Airport from the existing Calgary east LRT line.
  • Relieve Deerfoot Trail, McKnight Blvd, & Country Hills Blvd of traffic bottlenecks by providing multiple access points into the Airport
  • Provide industrial, Airport regional commercial, and employee traffic alternate access points into the Airport
  • Provide rapid response times for tourism visitor pickup to/from airport (20+ trips per day per hotel)
  • Provide rapid access in case of the need arises for emergency & police services beyond the capacity of the Airport detachments and units.
  • Avoid the routing of traffic through high-density development that is underway in the Airport region.
We need the Provincial & Federal Governments to join with the City, and provide funding so that this Tunnel can be built. We also need the Calgary Airport Authority to be a good neighbour and facilitate the construction of the Airport Tunnel and Roadway under the proposed new Parallel Runway. To do so at the same time as construction on the proposed runway would mean substantial cost savings over any attempt to bore a tunnel at a later date.

Without the Airport Trail Access Tunnel, all Calgary residents will suffer chronic airport commuting frustration. A future LRT line to the Airport will be impossible. East of Deerfoot business community will have an economic lifeline taken away. And NE residents will be cut off from easy access to the Airport, which for many will affect their livelihoods.
